Carter -- a good look at the history of history : This book was written in 1908 by a Harvard history professor, who's intro includes thanks to some schoolteachers (women, of course!) for their input. It was probably well received in 1908, because its well organized, written in short and easy to understand sentences and paragraphs, and is as comprehensive as you can expect in a book written for middle school or high school students.
